According to its official website, Crochet PatternGen is a free web-based tool designed to convert uploaded photos into stitch-ready crochet charts. The platform uses deterministic image processing to resize images, map grids, and apply color quantization to user-supplied photos, ensuring that the resulting chart directly translates to a crochet project. The vendor states that users can create pattern grids without needing to hand-trace images or guess where color boundaries fall. The pattern maker supports multiple popular crochet techniques, including graph (graphgan), corner-to-corner (C2C), tapestry, mosaic, and filet crochet. Users can adjust the grid width anywhere from 20 to 120 stitches, depending on their project size, and cap the palette at 2 to 16 colors. This color quantization is designed to generate a "yarn-friendly palette," providing hex codes so crafters can match actual yarn available in stores. The tool also calculates exact per-color stitch counts and numbers the grid rows to help users track their progress and estimate yarn usage before beginning a project. Beyond the primary photo-to-pattern generator, the official website features a suite of supplementary tools for yarn crafters. The vendor describes various calculators for yarn estimation, stitch counts, blankets, granny squares, and pricing, as well as an amigurumi pattern generator and a crochet letter chart maker. The platform also includes reference materials like abbreviation glossaries and symbol charts. For image processing, Crochet PatternGen emphasizes privacy, stating that user-uploaded files up to 10 MB in JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF format are never published and are used exclusively to build the downloadable chart. The vendor describes the tool as completely free with no sign-up required to generate instant PNG charts. It serves individual hobbyists, craft designers, and small business owners looking to create custom projects from pet portraits, logos, child drawings, or other personalized images. Users can experiment with different sizes and color limitations in seconds using a built-in slider mechanism.
