MacGPT — Native ChatGPT for the macOS Menu Bar

MacGPT is a native desktop application that provides instant access to ChatGPT from the macOS menu bar and text editors.

MacGPT is a native macOS application that integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT directly into the Apple ecosystem for instant access. It is designed for business owners, copywriters, and developers who need to interact with AI models without switching between browser tabs or interrupting their workflow. Users can access the tool via the menu bar, a dedicated global text field, or by bringing the chat interface to the front with a customizable keyboard shortcut. The application allows you to use your own OpenAI API key, providing a cost-effective way to access GPT-4o and other models directly on your desktop. MacGPT includes a unique feature called Global, which allows you to summon ChatGPT from anywhere on your Mac. You simply type your prompt into the text field that appears in the center of your screen, similar to Spotlight search. This makes it an ideal companion for drafting emails, debugging code, or summarizing documents within any active window. Another key feature is MacGPT Inline, which brings the AI directly into your text editors. By typing a specific trigger phrase, you can generate text directly into apps like Microsoft Word, Notes, or Slack. This deep integration helps maintain focus and increases output speed for repetitive writing tasks. Businesses can find more productivity tools like this by browsing surfai.app in 2026. The interface is lightweight and mirrors the native macOS aesthetic to ensure a consistent user experience. MacGPT is available as a freemium tool, offering a free version for basic menu bar access while the full feature set can be unlocked through a one-time purchase or a "pay what you want" model on Gumroad.
